Source: long-term climate normals (AEMET) for the Malaga coast. The strip from Estepona to Nerja shares almost the same climate; at altitude (such as Mijas Pueblo at 400 m) it is a few degrees cooler.
May, June, September and October are ideal: sunny and warm without the heat and crowds of high summer. July and August are the hottest months at 28 to 31°C. For a winter stay, November to March offers 17 to 20°C by day with 5 to 6 hours of sunshine.
October is one of the most pleasant months: around 24°C by day, a sea of 21 to 22°C that is still warm enough to swim in, and roughly 7 hours of sunshine. Evenings cool to about 15°C, so bring a light jacket.
Daytime temperatures run 17 to 20°C from December to February, with nights of 8 to 12°C and 5 to 6 hours of sun. That makes the Malaga coast one of the mildest places in mainland Europe for wintering.
Only for the brave: the sea is 15 to 17°C in winter. The real swimming season runs from June to October, when the water reaches 21 to 24°C. Many complexes have a heated pool.
Around 320 days of sunshine a year, which is why the coast is called the Costa del Sol. Even in the wettest months (November to January) rain falls on only 6 to 7 days per month on average.
